GINGER
A junior linguistics major, Ginger is intense an usually excited about whatever project she happens to be working on at the moment. She’s the kind of person who goes on a tear on whatever she decides to research at the moment, whether it be the agglutinative structure of Turkic languages, the recipe for the perfect lentil soup, or seeing which of the top 100 paid actors of 1995 is the hardest to link to Kevin Bacon. She raises her hand a little too frequently in class, rarely takes “no” for an answer, and occasionally deals with a wounded ego when she is less than perfect.
Ginger had been roommates with Kate for 2 years in the dorms, and they moved into their apartment about a month before school started. Though they’re basically inseparable as friends, Ginger is more likely to prompt Kate to do things like put away washed dishes take out the trash. Occasionally she’ll put off her own chores, however, when she’s “really into something.” So far this has not become a problem.
In terms of fashion, Ginger tries perhaps a little too hard to look adorable. She rocks the retro-50s look and is fairly conservative in her speech, though she’s not too judgmental of others (at least out loud). She also is wondrously good at keeping a mental tally of who owes whom what favor and accounting for them to see when they cancel out.

KATE
A junior creative writing major, Kate is much more the laid-back type. She always seem to wear the same blue-and-black men’s flannel shirt, an item she doesn’t mention that her most recent ex-boyfriend left over at her place. She washes her laundry but does not fold it. She takes walks around campus when she needs to get things done, looking for inspiration, and ends up writing poems instead of doing research for papers. But things tend to click for her in the end, and she does well in school. She makes fun of people who have crushes on Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights.
Kate appreciates Ginger’s ability to get her out of a depressed funk sometimes, even if she does occasionally chafe at what comes across as nagging. She watches more TV than her roommate and has a secret crush on both Gordon Ramsay and Tim Gunn. She does not tell anyone about the Pre-Raphaelite prints she has hanging in her room, preferring to come across as just a little bit grunge, a take-what-may-come tomboy who lets life roll over her like water.
If nothing else, Kate could do well to stick up for herself more from time to time. She rarely goes out and gets what she wants, and when the cards are against her she is much more likely to retreat inward than she is to try to surmount a problem. At rare times, however, she will go “on the warpath” and fight tenaciously against those who oppress her, be they bullies, snobs, or the dreaded Financial Aid Department.

TERRY
Though he dropped out of college a few years ago after becoming frustrated with civil engineering, Terry still considers himself a part of the “college culture.” He’s a few years older than the girls, and while he was active in “sustainable” environmentalist/political groups in the past, he has become jaded with them and their lack of any handle on the real world.
Terry has a small collection of hippie musical instruments (rain sticks, djembes, and a beat-up acoustic guitar) that he cannot play well, plus his old clarinet from high school (which hasn’t been touched in years).
